Last Update: 02 Apr 2012 02:28 PM

Health on the Net Foundation (HON) is a non-governmental, non-profit organization founded in 1995 under the auspices of the Geneva Ministry of Health and based in Geneva, Switzerland. It is the oldest and the most used ethical and trustworthy code for medical and health related information available on Internet and provides continuous efforts towards the improvement of the quality of online health and medical information.

A health or medical website holding the HON code certificate ensures its visitors that the website follows primary ethical standards. The certificate also guarantees that the site includes information about the source and the purpose of the data it contains as well as highlighting a new characteristic that is unique to each medical website.

The HON code is the most widely-accepted reference for online health and medical publishers. Currently, the HON code is used by over 6,800 websites in 118 countries.
