Post-Operative Rehabilitation
Last Update: 13 Jun 2012 01:41 PM
The Speech and Language Pathologist performs the post operative rehabilitation program with the patient. There is initial intensive input for the first week of switch-on when the patient is invited to attend for rehabilitation. The patient will then be seen at intervals to suit individual needs.
Switch-on of the cochlear implant system will take place around 3 to 4 weeks after surgery. The Audiologist carries out the switch-on and all processor tuning.
A patient’s processor map is altered as required by the patient and is checked at regular intervals, 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months, 18 months, 24 months and annually thereafter with Audiology.
Standardized speech perception testing, using material from
MRC IHR
, is carried out at 1 week after switch-on then at 6 months, 12 months and annually thereafter. In addition, speech tracking is performed at all test periods.
