Front Desk Area: All patients received in this department are initially seen at the front desk. Patients that have acute critical conditions are placed into Critical/Pediatric Care Areas expeditiously and patient registration is performed at the bedside. The more stable patients are initially triaged at the front desk and then proceed to Registration and formal physician triage.
Triage Area: The Triage Away of non-eligible patients, and those eligible ones with minor ailments, is done in the confined space (2 exam beds) of the Vital Signs Area of the ED, to the surrounding Primary Health Care Units is an important but stressful function. This function is performed by the ED staff physicians guided by the department’s established Triage Away Policy and ongoing monitoring. On average, > 40-50 % of patients is actively, but appropriately, triaged away to respective NGHA, PHU or external centers where they are eligible.
Critical Care: This is a 16-bed unit with state-of-the-art equipment, which is needed to resuscitate the acutely ill and injured patients, excluding pediatric (PC Area) as well as gynecological emergencies (AC Area). A dedicated room in Critical Care is used for decontaminating patients with any chemical exposure before they access the clinical areas of the Emergency Department
Adult Care: This is a 25-bed unit where patients with intermediate medical and surgical conditions are treated. This area has two dedicated fast track beds to deliver expeditious care to those patients that are signed into the department, especially during peak hours. Obstetrical and Gynecological patients are initially assessed in this area. Includes a nebulization room and an acute psychiatric patient care room.
Pediatric Care: This is a 26-bed unit for the care of Pediatric patients with critical, intermediate, and low acuity as well as resuscitation cases. Includes a nebulization room, hydration area and an observation area.
Urgent Care Center: This is an 8-bed unit for the care of eligible urgent cases with minor urgencies. Includes a suture room and nebulization rooms.
ED Observation Area: This is a 10-bed unit, dedicated for the care of patients that need an extended period of observation (< 24hrs) in the emergency setting, to prevent premature disposition and discharge of patients or minimize un-necessary costly hospitalizations. This area operates utilizing strict clinical protocols, treatments (e.g. IV hydration, asthma, etc.) or reassessment (e.g. chest pain, abdominal pain, etc.) with predetermined clinical outcomes.
The idea of EDOU is to decrease the number of unnecessary admissions thus decreasing the patient load of admissions to the hospital from the Emergency Department. Additionally, preventing pre-mature discharge and improving the quality of care provided
Emergency Medical Services Division (EMS) EMS has several roles; one is an ambulance service provider for all NG locations and transport of discharged patients in need inside and outside of Riyadh city. The EMS personnel play an essential supporting in-hospital role in assessment of all incoming cases of accidents, trauma or non-ambulatory/stretcher cases whether brought in by ambulances or private vehicles; and initiating immobilization protocols if indicated. They also participate as a team member in responding to in-hospital code green cardiac arrest cases.
Disaster Management The rapid changes in the physical layout of KAMC-Riyadh necessitated a revision of the organization’s original Disaster Plan, available to staff via the intranet since April 2006. It was first activated during the May 2003 bombings and on several subsequent incidents since. A Disaster Coordinator position was created and a permanent Saudi candidate assigned.
Residency, Interns and Medical Student Training programs The rapidly evolving changes in the vision and direction of KAMC-Riyadh necessitated a corresponding response to meet the needs of a newly emerging academic training department. Since October 2001, the department has achieved and maintained unconditional approval designation for its residency training programs in both the Saudi Board in Emergency Medicine & the Arab Board in Emergency Medicine.
