- The Department of Medicine takes pride in the quality of its human resource. All appointments are made with international benchmarks to include at a minimum certification in specialties and subspecialties and international experience in North American or European countries. Most of our staff have additional qualifications and specialized Fellowships and a significant number are certified in Epidemiology and applied Clinical Research.
- The service structure is a fine blend of experience and structured mentorship comprising of intermediate layers and residents and interns, selected from a competitive group in the Western Region. All aspects of expertise are available across the eleven subspecialty sections that the department oversees.
- Interventional cardiology presently operates in collaboration with two centers in Makkah and Jeddah and is expected to be fully operational as an independent department in 2012.
- The Residency program has been a model of excellence with an evidence based approach and assessed across CANMEDS competencies with robust evaluation tools inclusive of MCQ’s, OSCE and Mini CEX. The performance of our residents rank amongst the best in the entire Kingdom with three of our five candidates securing top three positions and all finishing in the top eight in the Part Two Saudi Board 2011 examinations.
- In the areas of Quality, the Department of Medicine has developed sixteen integrated care pathways in a collaborative, patient-centered and evidence informed approach. This accounts for 80% of all pathways in the western region. In addition the department measures up favorably in, morbidity and mortality reviews and in medical record completion.
- Through an ambitious program of developing and implementing sixteen clinical pathways targeting 80% of the inpatient diagnoses based on 2009 and 2010 statistics, we have laid the foundation of safe, systems based practice. In addition by securing KAIMRC approval and grants to study 7clinical pathways as pragmatic randomized controlled trials comparing pathway based versus usual care, we have extended the ownership of these pathways to residents, staff physicians, assistant consultants and Consultants throughout the department. We have strengthened institution wide collaborative processes through a year long planning and development phase with the departments of Pharmaceutical Care, Nursing, Family Medicine, and Nutrition, Social services, Health education, Patient services, CIMS team and Quality management.
- In addition, we have standardized the approach to Acute Medicine for residents in training as well as emphasized key outpatient targets for our patients.
- We have not lost sight of our objectives vis-a-vis all Sections of the department with respect to human resource needs, scope of Clinical services, infrastructure development and expansion of facilities. This has continued to evolve as an independent Cardiac Sciences center, approval of Neurosciences Center, approval of Mental Health center, approval of long term care facility, Sleep lab expansion, planned expansion of Endoscopy unit, active move towards indigenous renal transplantation program and expanded Dermatology services.
