About Department of Surgery - Jeddah

Department of Surgery

The Department of Surgery KAMC (Jeddah) comprises ten specialties. It broadly encompasses every area, including hepato-pancreatico-biliary (HPB) surgery, renal transplant, and robotic surgery. The general surgical department has been restructured by creating a new Vascular Surgery section.

Our department introduced robotic surgery, starting with the Urology Section, and is now involved in different surgical specialties. Day Surgery Unit is working effectively with a more than 50% utilization rate. It is helping in reducing the burden on inpatient beds occupancy rate.

Different projects were initiated. Examples, Same-Day Admission, Enhance Recovery After Surgery (ERAS), Winter Resilience, National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP), and evening clinics. The aim is to provide optimum care to surgical patients on time.

We continue to send trainees for scholarships overseas. We are exploring alternative sites worldwide to identify centers of excellence for our trainees to suitably accommodate their needs. We hope to increase our research portfolio over the next couple of years, emphasizing clinical research initially and looking forward to developing themes with the university research teams.

To this end, trainees are expected to create research interests during their program and present at least one paper at a national or international meeting. We would like to see much more energy devoted to research and audit. Excellent opportunities and facilities are available to work with the College and KAIMRC in these areas.

The Department of Surgery has always been to provide high-quality secondary and tertiary care to all surgical patients accepted for treatment in KAMC Jeddah. We provide humane care to achieve maximum productivity and cost-effectiveness.

Achieving this mission requires high-caliber staff, efficient systems, stability, a healthy work environment, and the best utilization of limited resources. The department needs to use its clinical and human resources to improve undergraduate and postgraduate training in KAMC and the Western Region. In addition, research must be encouraged.
We continue making all efforts to align the department with international standards.

The surgery department is capitalizing on improving the day surgery capacity to compensate for any inpatient bed capacity issue. We are also trying to increase our outpatient clinic numbers to reduce waiting times. The ongoing plans are to create new services like spine surgery, skull base surgery, and trauma surgery units through investing in scholarship programs. These plans are the primary targets for the Department of Surgery in 2021 and 2022.
