Some trauma to the head may be mild like slight bumps from minor falls in young children and require basic treatment and continued observation.  However common sense should be used in watching for the signs mentioned below.

What to do in case of mild head trauma?

• Apply ice to affected area.
• Watch patient for signs of bleeding or worsening symptoms.

What to do in case of severe head trauma?

• Keep the person silent and lying down in a low lit room, with the upper body (head and shoulders) slightly elevated.
• Don't move the person until medical help arrives but if necessary, try not to move the neck.
• If there is vomiting carefully turn head to the side.
• If head is bleeding try to stop it by apply steady pressure to the wound with gauze or a clean cloth. However, when suspecting a skull fracture, do not apply direct pressure.
• Check breathing and consciousness. Begin CPR if there are no signs of circulation e.g. breathing stops.
