Emergency dental care is needed if teeth are knocked out. If there is a chance to successfully re-implant them, the steps below must be immediately followed prior to seeing a dentist:

  • Gently hold the fallen tooth by the top and do not touch the roots.
  • The tooth must not be rubbed or scraped in order to preserve the root surface.
  • Rinse the tooth gently in a bowl of tap water not under running water.
  • Replace the tooth carefully in the socket and keep it in place until you see the dentist. Use gauze or a wet tea bag to help keep the tooth in place if it doesn't go all the way in.
  • If the tooth can't be replaced, it needs to be quickly placed  in a small amount of whole milk, your own saliva or a warm, mild saltwater solution — 1.2 milliliters salt to about 1 liter water.
