Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency Training Program is Under the Obstetrics & gynecology department, King Abdulaziz Medical City, Ministry of National Guard Health Affairs, Riyadh.

Program Duration: Five (5) years

The program aims to graduate competent, safe, skilled, and knowledgeable board-certified physicians by providing the environment and facilities for the residents to learn and gain cognitive and technical skills.

The program's outcome is that the candidate who completes the training and acquires knowledge and skills of the appropriate standards set by the Scientific Board is awarded the Saudi Specialty Certificate in Obs & Gyn. He/She should be capable of functioning independently in the field of Obstetrics &Gynecology.

Overview of Training levels:

This is a five-year program of Structured Training in Obs & Gyn; it is divided into two stages:

  • Junior-level (36 months include R1 – R2 - R3)

During this period, residents will work under direct supervision.

Junior level years are designed to provide core obstetrics & gynecology practice training, including low-risk cases management.

Residents must satisfactorily complete the allocated rotation (General Obstetrics and Gynecology rotations) for a given year and pass the end-year evaluation exam to pass from one year to the next level.

  • Senior-level (24 months including R4 - R5)

During this period, residents may work under indirect supervision to promote seniority and leadership skills.

The senior-level years are designed to provide training in high-risk case management, decision-making, and leadership skills.

Residents are required to satisfactorily complete the allocated rotation for given years (General Obstetrics and Gynecology rotations)

Rotations:

During the five years of training, each resident has to spend 13 months of rotations in sub-specialty and other departments, which will be arranged on a yearly basis throughout the five years. These includes:

Junior Level R1– R3 = 1-month rotation for Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU), Pathology, and Anesthesia.

Senior Level R3-R5 = 2 months rotation for Feto-Maternal Medicine(MFM), Reproductive Endocrinology (IVF), Gyne-oncology, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and Urogynecology.

Academic Activities:

Protected Academic Activities

  • Every Thursday from 10:00 – 13:00 hrs protected time for resident education activity.
  • Residents are released from their duties to attend this activity, and staff physicians will cover the L&D, ER, and emergency cases in the Ward.
  • Variety of Teaching activities include, e.g., problem-based learning (PBL), Lectures, Grand rounds, and Practical sessions.
  • The Deputy Chief Resident arranges a monthly schedule. Moderator is allocated for each session to assist the resident for his/her presentation.

Other Activities & Meetings

  • Daily Departmental Meeting – start at 8:00 AM for 30 minutes discussing on call and compelling cases.
  • 10 Minutes Talk – every Monday immediately after the Morning Report.
  • Morbidity Cases, Journal Review, or DPP ( Departmental Policy & Procedure) update every Tuesday after the Morning Report.Perinatal Morbidity and Mortality meeting every Monday at 12:30 – 13:30 hrs.

Condensed Orientation Sessions for R1

Orientation lectures that cover essential and everyday obstetrics & gynecology topics are arranged as two lectures/week for the first two months to facilitate engagement of the residents in the clinical work.

Program Governance:

It is overseen by Program Director and Deputy Program Director, Program Committee, and Postgraduate Medical Education.​
