Pediatric Surgery Residency Training Program

Pediatric Surgery Residency Program is a newly established SCFHS accredited residency training program provided by King Abdulaziz medical city, Ministry of National Guard Health Affairs under the Department of General pediatric surgery in King Abdullah specialized children's Hospital (KASCH).

Program duration: six (6) years

Program Aim:

The training residency program in Pediatric surgery aims to provide high training standards, assuring appropriate supervision in line with proper management for pediatric surgical patients in KASCH.

Program outcome:

Upon completing the program, Graduate physicians will be certified pediatric surgeons, competent to function as Consultant General Pediatric Surgeons. They are thoroughly trained pediatric surgeons who acquired the needed knowledge, skills, and professional attitude to practice in their field.

Overview of the training levels:

R1-3 (Junior level)

The first three years are formulated to obtain the fundamental knowledge and clinical skills related to Core surgical problems in General surgery, other specialties, and general pediatric surgery.

R4-6 (Senior level)

The last three years focus on acquiring advanced and up-to-date knowledge, clinical problem, advanced operative, and laparoscopic skills. The trainees will understand the challenges, controversies, and diversities in dealing with pediatric surgical problems.

​Program Academic activities

  • Weekly Half -Academic day is done under the department of pediatric surgery.
  • Other departments Half -Academic day will be attended while residents rotate with subspecialties, i.e. (General surgery, vascular, plastic, Thoracic, and hepatobiliary)
  • A monthly regional academic pediatric surgery activity in collaboration with other training centers
  • Research Resident day once/ academic year, residents are strongly encouraged to participate with papers or posters throughout their residency training.
  • Hospital-based Continues education activities.
  1. Daily morning round
  2. Weekly Grand rounds
  3. Monthly Radiology, pathology, and journal club meeting
  4. Twice monthly tumor board meeting with Oncology
  • Mandatory Simulation courses include (BLS, BOSS, FLS, ATLS, PALS, and Research methodology)
