To optimize the management of patients with suspected/proven infections at King Abdulaziz Medical City – National Guard Health Affairs, Jeddah.

To provide teaching of infectious disease to trainees within the department.

To carry out limited, clinically oriented research in the area of infectious disease.
The section of Infectious Diseases is providing a hospital wide consultation service for outpatients and inpatients. It also performs an inpatient services for HIV infection. These services are conducted through a rotating trainee, usually a resident, with a contribution of rotating fellow.
Consultation service to all departments is provided during regular hours, after hours and on weekends. Residents and fellows will have the chance to learn the management and follow-up with patients with HIV, tuberculosis, brucellosis, osteomyelitis and harware related infections.
Interns, residents, fellows and consultants are contributing to the various presentations. In the first Sunday of every month, house staff will have a microbiology round in the microbiology laboratory. They will be familiar with the different gram stain of gram positive and gram bacteria as well as cultures and antibacterial susceptibility. They will also be familiar with the different fungi.
The section is accredited by the Saudi Council of Health Specialties as a training center for the Fellowship program in Infectious Diseases for July 2005.
Upon completion of the Infectious Diseases rotation, trainees are expected to be familiar with the following aspects of infectious diseases:

A practical approach to the febrile patient including the immunocompetent & immunocompromised host

Major infectious syndromes (community acquired & hospital related), their etiology, pathogenesis, clinical presentation, diagnosis and management

Common anti-infective agents, their cost, spectrum of activity, toxicities, interactions, special adjustments and precaution.

The role of the microbiology lab in the management of patients with infectious diseases.
Interns, residents and fellows are requested to download the ID resident file located in the desktop of the main computer in the Department of Medicine. It contains an updated and comprehensive review for the most common infectious diseases syndromes (community acquired pneumonia, nosocomial pneumonia, UTI, meningitis, abdominal sepsis, ID emergencies, Fever in ICU, infections in solid organ transplantation, febrile neutropenia guidelines, prosthetic joint infections, septic arthritis, osteomyelitis, invasive candida infections, aspergillosis, TB & HIV).
Consultants will guide trainees for specific references related to certain infectious diseases topics as they arise during the rotation. Harrison textbook of Internal Medicine is always a comprehensive reference for any Infectious Diseases question.
